- <H2> Arctic spas reviewThis review is based on personal evaluation of one 2012 Kondiker hot tub, reviews on line, and service help requests from the forums, it is the authors opinion only. To the best of our knowledge this is an honest and unbiased evaluation of the product, however it may contain errors. The evaluators have a minimum of 20+ years experience in the hot tub industry. Overall rating C+Component Quality DEnergy rating ABuild Quality AValue for money CWhile at one time we would have rated this spa in the upper B or even A rating their move from proven components to cheap Chinese made parts has driven this spa into the bottom of our ratings, while there are 5 manufacturers of jets and fittings out there they have gone to Rising Dragon jets, filters, fittings and water controls, and it is costing them market share, their flagship dealer in Toronto with a pile of locations dumped them this season after almost a decade of selling Arctic. Similarly in 2011 they moved from our number 2 ranked electronic control and heating system (Gecko) to a no name system that they claim to build themselves… Anytime a hot tub manufacturer claims to build their own systems or jets do a reality check…. there is simply no way that any hot tub company could afford to open their own electronic fabrication facility, or plastic injection molding facility, the idea is ludicrous, this should always be a warning sign, hiding a cheap component list behind private branding is the oldest trick in the book. The Good:Well-built structurally. Good insulation system.Nice base. Overall a great looking hot tub.The Bad:-The over-sized plumbing on the model we saw was internally glued and passed through regular 2” fittings… no advantage at all over standard 2" plumbing systems.-The foam appears to be polyethylene based. This is one of our lower ranked foams as it is environmentally unsound, and the foam hardens and breaks down over time.-The Plumbing was unsupported.-The access was limited to 2 small hatches on each side. And The Ugly:Component list is from the least expensive end of the market. Rising Dragon (China) jets, fittings and water controls are among the cheapest available. The electronic control and heating system was not from any of the known brands and was stamped on the circuit board with "Made in China"...The Pitch:Not surprisingly the pitch we got was centered on classic side track issues, I can’t stress this enough people, this industry is all about component quality and if you don’t have that you better make up a good story, and Arctic has done a fantastic job of spinning up a great marketing strategy.Shell: AThe pitch our local dealer used was about a thicker shell for durability. They make the edge of the shell thick and talk about shell strength… the spa we looked at had a thicker shell edge but the fitting we removed from the sidewall showed the shell was 1/2 the thickness of the edge, this is more than adequate.Insulation: AThe insulation system used by Arctic has proven to be effective and puts them in the A group but there is no magic bullet, forget the sales pitch, the hard data from CEC shows them to be no better or worse than a good foamed in spa with heat reclaiming. One down side is the foam on the spa we saw appeared to be Polyurethane insulation which oxidises and gets hard and brittle; it loses R-value as it gets older. The pitch about full foam tubs being hard to service is old school. The top end of the market has shifted to newer water based foams that do not get hard and do not oxidize. Leak repair is as easy on a full foamed spa as it is on the arctic spa. Full foam spas are also not as prone to leaks as the plumbing is supported.Plumbing: BThe pitch is that they use an oversized two and a half inch plumbing system for higher flow rates.First the plumbing system uses large 2 ½” pipe, but all the fittings were internally glued and ran through 2” shut off valves and heater tube!, this makes the over sized pipe a waste of time as the highest flow rate you get is limited by the smallest pinch point, so the best you get on this plumbing system is 2” regular flow rates.Secondly the flow rate for 2” plumbing is way over the flow rate for the pump anyways so even if they had bothered to spend the money to truly plumb a real 2 ½” system the advantages would be negligible. The plumbing is unsupported. Access to the spa is limited to 2 small doors per side, difficult corner seat access.Spa Base: AThe pitch is that they use fiberglass bottom and that the spa can be put on any flat level surface without a proper foundation.First the base of your spa will never be a failing point, all you really want here is a membrane that will prevent water from getting into the foam.Secondly it is simply bad information to tell a customer that the spa can be put on the ground without creating a base, while it is true it will not hurt the spa (almost any spa can be put on any flat surface) the ground needs to be prepared for the load of the spa or it will not settle evenly, putting a spa on the grass or other existing surface will mean that the ground under the spa settles unevenly and then you spa is out of level, this puts a lot of strain on the spa. It also means that a couple years down the road you will likely need to lift the spa and prepare the surface properly like you should have done in the first place!
